Exploration Innovation for Sustainable Mine Water Management
The MINOTAUR Project was prominently featured at the International Mine Water Association (IMWA) Conference, held in Braga, Portugal, from 6 to 11 July 2025. The event brought together over 300 participants representing more than 40 countries, and included 150 oral presentations and 46 posters focused on water management challenges and innovations in mining.
We had the pleasure of organizing a Business Brunch during the international CloudEARTHi Conferenceheld in Wrocław on June 9–11, 2025.
The event brought together experts from academia, business, and public institutions to discuss innovation, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. Keynote speeches were delivered by representatives from EIT Raw Materials, LUT University, TerraEye, and ENERIS R&D. The brunch featured a dynamic panel discussion on intersectoral cooperation.
Discussions highlighted the role of AI, secondary raw materials, and regional policy in supporting innovation ecosystems. The event provided a unique networking space for participants to exchange ideas and explore future collaboration.
The SURVISHNO 2025 conference took place from May 21st to 23rd, 2025, in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine. SURVISHNO is a joint organization of the Surveillance, VISHNO (Vibration Shocks and Noise), and EVA (Experimental Vibration Analysis) conferences. Its goal is to bring together experts working in both universities and industry who specialize in vibration and machine condition monitoring. The conference provided a forum for the latest advances in these fields. As part of a mini-grant awarded to PhD students at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology Doctoral School, Daniel Kuzio presented the results of his research on cyclostationary analysis of non-Gaussian signals, in particular, methods for improving the quality of cyclic spectral coherence maps through signal transformation.
On Friday, April 25, 2025, the rich history and beautiful customs of Czech mining were proudly celebrated.
Professor Radosław Zimroz was invited to attend the 136th edition of the traditional “Skok přes kůži” (Jump over the Leather), an annual event co-organized by VSB – Technical University of Ostrava. During the official ceremony, and after fulfilling all the customary rituals, Professor Zimroz was formally inducted into the Czech mining community.
A seminar entitled “Sustainable Lithium for Europe 2025” organized by the European Lithium Institute (eLi) was held in Brussels on May 15, 2025, bringing together more than 70 key representatives from industry, academia, and public administration involved in the development of the European lithium value chain.
On April 16, 2025, at the initiative of Professor Jerzy Detyna, Director of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology (PWr) Branch in Wałbrzych, a meeting took place between representatives of the Faculty of Geoengineering, Mining and Geology (WGGG) of PWr (Dean of the Faculty, Professor Radosław Zimroz, and Dr. Magdalena Worsa-Kozak) and the Mayor of Wałbrzych (Mr. Roman Szełemej), Deputy Mayor (Mr. Kacper Nogajczyk), representatives of the Center for Science, Culture, and Art “Stara Kopalnia” (Centrum Nauki i Sztuki Stara Kopalnia) in Wałbrzych (Mr. Jan Jędrasik – Director, Ms. Wioletta Wrona-Gaj – Head of the Museum of Industry and Technology), as well as the President of the Szczawno-Jedlina Health Resort (Mr. Krzysztof Urbański).
The highly promising discussions focused on joint initiatives to promote the mining industry and the preparation of R&D projects, and continued into the late afternoon. The visit also included a tour of the “Stara Kopalnia” in Wałbrzych and the Health Resort in Szczawno-Zdrój, providing an opportunity to better understand the challenges faced by these institutions. This collaboration holds great potential, and both sites impress with their rich mining heritage and grandeur!
Our colleague, Dr Hamid Shiri, has been accepted as a research fellow at the University of Southampton. He will work on cable diagnosis in the EU project https://cablegnosis.eu/
On May 8, 2025, we hosted at the DMC Prof. Marcin Wolkiewicz from the Department of Electrical Engineering, with whom we are collaborating on processing electrical signals for motor diagnostics as part of the HECATE project.
A big challenge, but as you can see, the mood is good!
Last week, we at Digital Mining Center had the pleasure of organising and hosting the consortium meeting in Wrocław 🇵🇱. Over three dynamic days, partners gathered at the Faculty of Geoengineering, Mining and Geology of Wrocław University of Science and Technology for technical discussions, planning the following milestones for the innovative autonomous mineral exploration robotic tool and field visit to a drilling site.
The mission? To develop a compact robotic system that can explore deep boreholes, detect critical raw materials in real time, and seamlessly integrate data into a digital twin of the deposit – all while enhancing safety and reducing environmental impact.
